The LEAP STEAM +E Academy of San Juan is currently serving 660 students from grades K through 10th residing in Sabana Llana community of San Juan. The impetus for the development of the school is anchored on a larger community development initiative spearheaded by residents in a community plagued by high levels of poverty, urban decay/abandonment, high rates of crime and violence and inexcusable rates of undereducation. The development of the school is capitalizing on the genuine desire of its residents to provide children and youth with a quality education option that can be life changing and alter the future trajectory of the entire neighborhood.
The LEAP STEAM Community Hub has been designed by LEAP Social Enterprise to integrate a pipeline that will bring social and economic impact to the Sabana Llana region in Puerto Rico. It brings a model for academic excellence and results that successfully address the school dropout and college readiness challenges in Puerto Rico. Furthermore, the Hub will include resources for the entire community including a health care facility and wellness center, early childhood academy, a workforce development training center, a fabrication lab, and a facility that supports environmental sustainability, resilient emergency responses, and solar powered microgrid with backup batteries. These conceptual designs show our vision for what the new building will look like.
